There's a cozy cottage in Maine... it's up for sale. It's Kirstie's Cottage. Actress Kirstie Alley has put her Islesboro, Maine cottage on the market. The 5 bedroom 4 bath property only accessible by ferry or by air sits on a wooded lot overlooking the West Penobscot Bay. Kirstie's Cottage list for $2.35 million. In the interior decor world Grays are getting lots of play these days... especially walls. I think we're just catching on to their versatility and how to use them. With their many undertones they can be used as neutrals. Warm up the gray palette with wood finishes and colorful textiles. Gray has always worked well as an accent color. What draws me into a gray space is the serenity created by the color. Pair it with soft textiles and let the space become an open invitation to the dweller.

Rooms by designer Mary McDonald don't always come across simple. But, this one does. It's soft, elegant with straight clean lines from the drapes to the moulding.

Kennedy's Kalorama Home

The late Sen.Ted Kennedy's grand home in the Kalorama area of Washington. DC has recently sold for $6.5 million to the Republic of Gabon. The structure is classic Greek Revival and sits on a well groomed tree line street. I would have loved to tour this property but with the listing price of $8 million I didn't quite meet the requirement to "show financial ability" to get a look. Can't you imagine the political discussions that must have taken place in the senator's library? With more than 8,900 square feet, six bedrooms, an indoor pool, two balconies, five fireplaces and beautiful gardens this house is nothing short of elegant...a grand house for entertaining and large family gatherings. I understand the Republic of Gabon will use it for it's official ambassador's residence.

I love the patina of aged decor especially reclaimed wood. It has that rustic weathered look and feel that speaks of character and experience.It's already had a full life and instead of being discarded someone has recognized it's beauty, value and richness and reclaimed it. There are species of wood no longer available unless they are reclaimed. Every plank tells a story of a former life. Much of the salvaged wood comes from old rural barns or factories built during the American industrial revolution. Once considered garbage this wood is being cleaned up and reused to bring depth and age to new homes and commercial spaces. How green is that?

When it comes to the bedroom most husbands don't want to feel as though it's been decorated without him in mind. I haven't met the guy who's comfortable in a frilly pink bed covered with fluffy lace pillows. After all, he sleeps there too. So, what I do suggest to bring him into the fold is choosing fabrics and colors that he can live with. Why this bedroom works for husband and wife has a lot to do with color and fabric. The blue is a soft ethereal shade that brings softness to the room. The fabric choices are complimentary. The plaid brings in the masculine side while the brown velvet on the duvet is for her. The pillows are in many shapes and sizes. Accessories round out the room with chunky night stands and feminine lamps. I like pretty in the bedroom but when it's shared by the man of the house it can't be pink.

Oval Office Makeover

Like many things in the Washington, DC design scene the makeover of the Oval Office doesn't call attention to itself. It's definitely substance over style. I'm not surprised. This make over recognizes the economic times we're in. It also shows it's cerebral side. I think this room is highly personal for the president. He spends lots of time here... It needs to have a calming effect. Color is tonal. Furniture and accessories are well chosen... they have significance to the president. I especially like the reupholstered brown leather chairs and the soft texture of the twin sofas. Absolutely love the contemporary coffee table. This Oval Office feels more comfortable and casual than previous but it's also thoughtful and serious. I hope it meets all the needs of the president.

What's inspiring me right now? Sustainable products... There are many beautiful products on the market with more elements of sustainability than ever before. Most manufacturers are including more and more items in their product lines that emphasize green living. I recently had a client with extreme allergies so I sourced fabrics low in chemical exposure. Here are designs that incorporate sustainable products beautifully. Concrete floors, teak ceilings, bamboo bedding, non VOC paint, recycled copper, recycled glass and recycled plastics for carpet are common green materials . This list is not all inclusive. New green products are coming to market all the time. Many are made in the US but there are imports too.

Small Water Features

If you love water features in the garden and want a water feature but don't have much space in your yard consider these...

....a place to stick a toe in... cool the feet.... want to hear the sound of water running to muzzle street noise? I have two suggestions. One, add a water feature to your small yard or townhouse garden then get a birdcage with a couple of singing birds.... The impact will be such that you'll want to spend the entire summer outside.

As long as a pot can hold water it can be used for a water feature.

Add a small bird bath as your water feature in a very small garden.

This well designed garden can be scaled for a smaller spacer too.

Sometimes all you may have to work with is a corner. I love the way this garden also uses plantings in pots to add variety to the foliage surrounding the water feature.

Here is another example of a water feature that can be scaled for a smaller space.

When your garden wall is shorter.... adjust the size of your pool.

On a design "field trip" as my friend Mary, of The Drapery Shop and I like to call them I discovered this cute little decorative arts studio. The studio had two large picture windows and a captivating display. Since it was early in the morning the studio or workroom, I'm not sure which one, wasn't open. The decorative pieces were so lovely I couldn't help but pull out my camera and shoot. This is what I captured. I'm sure you will agree with me that this artist does excellent work with paint...especially metallices. The sad part is on my way home a few hours later I passed the shop and all the display windows were covered with brown butcher paper. I'm still puzzled...why?

Mark Hampton's Home

Mark Hampton was one of America's high profile classic decorator's and his style lives on. Since his death in 1998 his wife, Duane Hampton still lives in the Park Avenue apartment she and Mr. Hampton moved into in 1971. Mr Hampton redecorated the apartment in 1991 and although Mrs. Hampton has made changes much remains in homage to the decorator. I love the feel of this beautifully decorated space. It's sumptuous and elegant. The walls,... decorated with richly patterned wallpaper. The use of color draws the eye and I absolutely love the lavish use of fabric.... this style and space is timeless.

Kitchen Counter Tops

I appreciate natural materials for kitchen counter tops. In a former life I worked in the design center of a national builder and spent countless hours coordinating counter top samples with cabinet woods. One of my favorite granite choices was Black Galaxy. I love the depth of Black Galaxy granite with its cooper flecks sitting atop warm maple cabinets. It's a transitional look that works well in a traditional home. But I always wanted to push fashion forward with other counter top materials. Materials such as Carrera marble, stainless steel, butcher's block and soap stone are timeless and create a worn patina when used in contemporary settings.

Most of us aren't that good at imagining what a room will look and feel like with a color change. I love color.... As long as I have something to work against like fabrics or textiles I'm pretty good at color selection. It comes with experience... If I do make a mistake a redo is in order...after all it's only paint. Most examples of what I see when working with clients is too little hue in their color selections. It's as thought they know they need to get rid of the four white walls but afraid to take the plunge. What ends up happening is their color selections come up looking a bit anemic. Well fear no more! I have a tool that can give you a better idea of what your finished result will look like before you make a commitment. Try the Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer. All you have to do is upload a photo of the room you want to paint, drop and drag on your paint color. You can change the color as often as you like. Accessories can make all the difference in your space to personalize it. Whether small space... large space. If you're an apartment or condo dweller and want to personalize your space I have an idea for you. Most apartments come equipped with those vinyl mini blinds. They're always in some shade of white and their primary use is privacy. I like what my friend Mary, of The Drapery Shop in Manassas, VA did for a DC client to solve their mini problem. She fabricated a beaded sheer for the client's dining room window that overlooks a busy NW street. It softens the blinds...almost hides it and adds a great accent to the room... loving it.

Life in a small space can be a challenge. I get a lot of inquiries on what to do for small space seating. Planning is a must to fashionably maximize small space living. What can get complicated is finding the right sofa. I always recommend an armless sofa in an apartment or condo. Armless sofas allow for more versatility in placement. They can be pushed flush against a corner wall or placed at an angle against adjacent walls. Check out these three selections I found and let me know what works for you.

Sunday Snow Day

As most of the country knows...The Washington, DC metro area has been hit hard by a blizzard that dumped more than 30 inches of snow in most areas. The big storm started Friday afternoon. It snowed all day Saturday and by Sunday I had to get out of the house. The main roads were still in the process of being plowed. My husband and I set out to DC to see what was happening in the city. He had to stop by a construction site and I picked up my camera and we hit the road. We had a great time and ventured to Capitol Hill where I shot some of my favorite houses...

California Casual - It's Complicated

I love the look and feel of what I call California Casual. That's what I call the set design in the Christmas movie It's Complicated. OK, I know it's early February and we're buried in 24" of snow. I admit I'm a little late but I'm finally putting together this post... I've been thinking about it for more than a month.
Open spaces that merge interior and exterior speak to me. Kitchen gardens, herb gardens or any edible garden inspires me to spend more time in the kitchen.... Yet, most of all I absolutely love any design opportunity that gives me the chance to work with natural fabrics, linen drapes, cashmere throws, wool carpet and introduce elements of green decor into a space.

Cold Comfort

It's been very cold here in Northern Virginia since mid December I can deal with a few gloomy days but we're going into our third week of beyond cold for our area. All I want to do every morning is just stay in bed... Since I can't do that all day I can drool over beautiful stylish bedrooms from some of my favorite designers. These bedrooms inspire one to pull the covers up and stay warm and cozy... until the weather breaks.

Why would I ever want to leave this bedroom? The red velvet headboard is Moroccan inspired and reminds me of the red fez hats worn in Morocco and Turkey.

Another Moroccan inspired headboard. This one designed by Jonathan Berger is full of detail... love the mix of pattern and color in this room...skillfully done.

Celedon on the walls and a Alessandra Branca headboard is offset with cool white bed covers.

Pairing Morrocan woodwork with pink would have been the furthest thing from my mind but it works very well here..

This is why we like Michael S. Smith so much. Traditional sensibilities with an updated touch.

When do we get to see what he's done in the residential quarters at the White House?

One can never go wrong with soft and pretty in the bedroom. The floral fabrics in this room pull the solid colors together nicely.

Here, in northern Virginia it just began to feel like Christmas. I can't remember the last time we had snow during the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, but oh boy it's beginning to feel like Christmas today. The entire east coast has more than enough snow on the ground, malls are closed in some areas and I can't help but get outside. I couldn't take pictures today...too hard to walk in 18" of snow without snow boots. So I'm posting these beautiful holiday exterior doorways to get excited about....enjoy.

Washington White House Christmas

The First family opened the Christmas season this week with festivities at Presidential Park and the White House. First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a tour of the decorated White House. More than 80 volunteers from 26 states worked on the decorations.... I wonder how you get on that decorating committee... .If you missed it I'll share some of it with you here....

The annual White House Christmas Tree Delivery... This year an 18 foot Douglas fir is delivered to the Blue Room which is the official location of the White House tree.

This is holiday week and we open the holiday season with Thanksgiving this Thursday... I can't wait!! This is also the time when we decorators like to pull out all the stops with beautiful tablescapes and imaginably creative wasys to decorate our houses or someone elses... Organic tablescapes... colorful dining rooms... mix old with new. It's also the time to use what we have. Haven't we all acquired so many beautiful things over the years?.... Something old accompanied with something new, something borrowed mixed with something blue. This tradition need not wait for the wedding season. I'm going to California for Thanksgiving. It's November. We're about to enter the holiday season. Airline ticket prices are down...so, isn't this the perfect time to fly home for the holidays? I plan to head to the coast. No staycation here. I've done enough of that. I do remember my way to San Jose.... California that is... silicon valley... the Bay Area. It's time to visit family and friends. But, if you're staying put and having overnight guest....why not spruce up that unused guest room? You know the one that doubles as an office, craft room and a catch all.
Airline travel can be tiresome and rushed during the holiday season so before your guest arrive pull out all the decorating stops. Paint, de-clutter, buy new bedding, update accessories. Give the room the formality of being the designated guest room. If... only for a week.

Since my last post on color I've searched for more inspiring color combinations and I've found them. These designers style and use of color inspires me. I love the way designer
Mary McDonald uses orange with blue and green. I also like the subtle use of color by designer Lindsey Harper in her small New York bedroom. Strong color and not so common color combinations are outside the box. Innovative designers are pushing color in design in a greater way. After all who would have thought of painting walls chocolate ? Just a few years ago it was unheard of. Now chocolate is used freely adding drama and sophistication to any space.

Paint manufacturers introduce new colors yearly and many homeowners are willing to take the plunge to update their spaces. I believe....if you're not sure how to use charcoal gray and cherry red in the same room of course....call a designer that specializes in....Color.

Why Color Is King

Every designer knows the quickest and most exciting way to add drama to a room is with color. Most of us are afraid to use it and when we do it's often ineffective. Homeowners should work with a color consultant to assist in coming up with a coordinated color pallet that takes color from room to room. Color evokes lots of emotion. I love cool colors in common living areas with a contemporary style. One of the places I turn for color inspiration is nature. You can't go wrong when pulling a color pallet together pulling colors from nature. I learned this tip from a friend years ago when putting our first apartment together.

When using textiles for drapes and rugs look for dominate colors in the fabrics for accessories and wall color. This is a simple way to start when attempting to coordinate a space.
I always think color should be used dramatically...after all, we don't live in a black and white world.

The Bape chair,the Japanese update of the classic Eames fiberglass shell chair definitely provides the Wow factor to any room. The big question is where do you find the chair in the U.S.? Due out soon in Japan we're searching for it's U.S. debut. Any of these chair colors will add splash to a monochromatic space or make a great compliment with the color palette you're working with. The chair should retail for about $500 once it hits our market so... I'll keep my eyes open. I'm a chair lover and this is one I'd love to get my hands on....

Southern Accents is gone. Because I've lived in the south so long naturally I've come to love the style of Southern Accents magazine. It 's elegant, beautiful, orderly and stylish with a touch of southern restraint. The show houses in this shelter magazine depict the gentility of southern design. Heaped in tradition they were graceful and refined. I appreciated the free and easy style of now defunct Domino... but now and then I want my inner most southern belle to come out...It's more formal but not stuffy, edited but not too restrained.
I hope this is the last of the disappearing shelter mags... I'll miss my Southern Accents.
